I recently recieved my order of a german movie dvd called “Der Untergang”,The Downfall in english.This movie recieved tremendous applause in the international festivals like toronto and venice film festivals and been nominated last year for best foriegn language film in the academy awards.This is a great depiction of the last days of hitler in the war torned berlin in film.There is also a book about this story called “The Downfall Berlin:1945″.The Director Oliver Hirschbeigel known as an experimental director in thier country,starts the movie with Traudl Junge(hitler’s secretary) commenting on hitler,her views on the war and first hand experiences.This footage was also seen on the documentary film “Hitler’s Secretary” in 2002. The Main plot opens The Scene on War torned Berlin in april 1945,With hitler and his top officials are hiding inside an underground bunker,he celebrated his 56th birthday underground with russian planes bombing berlin and closing in to capture him.Although He did all what he could do,many betrayals of his top officials and generals fleeing outside berlin,left him incapacitated to continue the defense/offense on the allied forces.He Decided that if he will fall it will be on berlin,he will not flee or surrender.He asked his remaining top officials who are loyal to him to flee or surrender,because they would also die if they are captured by allied forces.But some resisted including his secretary traudl commenting that they would die with thier leader..confusion after confusion,betrayal upon betrayal,one day on the last week of april 1945,Hitler called two of his top officials,one corporal and a doctor,telling his plan that he will commit suicide with his wife eva braun.he also asked the corporal to burn them once they are dead to leave no evidence and exposure to the allied forces dead or alive..On the eve of april 30 1945,after dinner..Hitler and his wife commited suicide and officials burned thier bodies,with the last salute “heil hitler!”..right after that officials in the bunker,also committed suicides..The Ending Scenes shows us the german troops surrendering to russians,ruined buildings and dead people scattered everywhere.and the announcement that germany is completley surrendering and opening for peace talks.The Closing Scene is From Traudl again with her view of the 50 million people suffered on the war.. The Movie was a hefty 2 hour and 35 minutes..But This movie is really a gem in filmaking history..Count on me,it will be one of the best war movies ever made,and with its german cast and crew,its very authentic.hehehe. Ive Been Always Fascinated of World War II,not Because of the people suffered..but to the view of a leader,that he would build an empire that will last for thousands of years.He Is Close to implementing it.His Luftwaffe(air division) had the first jets in 1938,the first ever,us only copied it after the war..Thier tanks are superior..the artillery..the crews like nachtjagers..but he did his leadership in a wrong way..Yeah.He will Be remembered for thousands and thousands of years though..hehe..Its History!
